What is freeze drying and how does it work?

Freeze drying is a process that removes 98-99% of moisture from food, versus dehydrating food which may only remove 80-90% of moisture content. This increases the shelf life of freeze dried foods!

Another benefit of freeze drying is that unlike dehydration, freeze drying does not shrink or toughen the food. It retains more flavour, colour, and nutrition! (This is a big reason why Sender prefers freeze dried foods, and so do we!)

The freeze drying process:

  • The meat is frozen, the temperature goes down to -40° C/F. (Did you know this is where Fahrenheit and Celsius meet?)
  • A vacuum is then created to remove air from the chamber, creating an environment with very low pressure.
  • At this low pressure, sublimation (the conversion of the solid ice crystals into a gaseous state, avoiding the liquid phase) can occur as heat is added.
  • The vacuum state (low pressure) increases the speed of sublimation and decreases the temperature required for sublimation to occur.
  • With this process freeze drying is able to remove moisture from food without breaking the molecular bonds, maintaining the shape and nutrition of the food! And the low temperature means that the raw meat stays raw!

Typically the freeze drying process takes anywhere from 24-38 hours.

What is the shelf life of freeze dried pet treats?

Freeze dried food is ideal for long term storage, when kept sealed in a dark and cool location, freeze dried products can last up to 25 years.

However, we don't recommend holding onto your pet treats for that long, your pet will want them sooner.

Once opened and at room temperature, treats have a shelf life of 1 month.

If you don't think you will use up our products within a month of receiving them we recommend storing them in your fridge or freezer for long term storage.

How to store treats?

Store treats in a dark and dry location to ensure they stay fresh.

Make sure to seal the bag or container well after opening.

Each bag contains a safe silica gel desiccant to help protect the treats from any moisture in the environment that may enter the bag once opened. If you transfer the treats into another storage container, add the silica gel to that container as well.

Once you open a bag of treats and allow oxygen into the bag the treats may slowly change from red to brown. This is completely normal and safe. We seal the treats in the bags as soon as they are finished in the freeze drier so they do not oxidize, but once they are open this process will occur as our treats are completely natural and without preservatives.

How to feed?

Our bags of bite sized treats are all cut into bite size portions that make great on the go training treats and rewards!

For chews:

Always supervise your pet when consuming chews, such as our whole rabbit legs. We recommend even holding the chew for your pet - this is both a bonding experience and ensures that your pet will not swallow an item whole!

All products are freeze dried, so all moisture has been removed - make sure your pet always has access to fresh water.

Why "Sender to the Summit Snacks"?

We know, it's a mouth full. There were too many things we wanted to include in the name.

Sender - obviously we had to include our boy's name in the company name. This whole venture is based on his picky taste buds and sensitive stomach.

Summit - There is nowhere we love to be more than in the mountains, and a big reason we go through so many dog treats is because of all of our adventures. Sender gets a lot of snacks to keep him fueled up on the way to the summit!

Snacks - We wanted to include, at least a gist, of what we/ the company is actually selling!

So instead of narrowing down the name and making it short and catchy, we included it all.

What does the future look like for Sender to the Summit Snacks?

We want to remain fairly small and always hands on, ensuring quality and a personal touch!

However, overtime we do plan to source and produce more products! We love giving Sender new novel proteins and we would like to give everyone that option! Variety is the spice of life!

The website and its features are also in the beginner stage and we will improve and add to it as time goes on!

Going international?

We will be remaining domestic (Canada only) for the time being. We love our international friends but its a big step to ship meat products across borders!

Environmental Initiatives

  • As long as boxes are in good condition we reuse cardboard boxes when shipping orders to cut down on our waste!
  • We have switched over to recyclable packaging for our treats and chews! Keep an eye out for the recycle symbol on the bottom right hand corner.
  • We endeavor to utilize all parts of an animal to minimize waste such as bones - we use the bones to create freeze dried bone broth!
